Usually, "Tis the season to be jolly" is the perfect catchphrase for Sagittarius season. Not so this year. Thanks to a cautious cosmic lineup, don't be surprised if you're feeling a little extra grinchy this holiday season.

Each year, thanks to an ever-moving sky, Zodiac signs manifest a little differently. So, let’s dive into the astrological energies that set the 2023 Sagittarius Season apart from other years, and how you can discover how to make the best of it.

If you want to learn more about what the Zodiac sign Sagittarius means in general, check out my post on how to Make the Most of Sagittarius Season.

This year, the Sun enters Sagittarius on Nov. 22, 2023, at 9:02 a.m. Eastern U.S. and remains there until Dec. 21, 2023, at 10:27 a.m. Eastern U.S.

Here's the solar chart for the 2023 Sagittarius ingress:

2023 Sagittarius Ingress Astrological Data

  • Sun’s Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
  • Aspects to the Sun: Sun square Saturn in Pisces (and with Mercury, in detriment and out of bounds, in Sagittarius)
  • Sun sign Ruler: Jupiter
  • Location of Sign Ruler: Jupiter in Taurus
  • Aspects to the Sign Ruler: Unaspected (with Uranus in Taurus)
  • Location of the Moon: Pisces
  • Aspects to the Moon: Moon conjunct Neptune in Pisces, trine Mars in Scorpio
  • Other Important Considerations: Uranus sextile Neptune sextile Pluto

At the beginning of the 2023 Sagittarius season, the Sun squares off with dour Saturn, which has been navigating through watery Pisces since March. It will take Saturn several years to get used to his new living situation. Saturn loves order, structure, boundaries and pragmatism; Pisces is unfamiliar with all of these concepts. But it’s an odd couple that can lead to much growth, especially if you’re willing to stress the practice in spiritual practice. In its square with the Sun, our consciousness is drawn to creating sustainable habits that support our beliefs and dreams (or overcoming the bad habits that get in our way). When in doubt, focus on the Now.

Mercury’s also hanging out in Sagittarius. However, Mercury’s gifts may be more of a burden than a blessing in this Jupiter-ruled sign. Why? Well, in Sagittarius planets want to discover the Truth, with a capital T. Mercury, however, is much more comfortable with the notion that there are many, many kinds of truth. The result can be overthinking, over-sharing or over-talking – all things that can be an impediment to your quest. Making it even more difficult, Mercury is also out of bounds (and approaching the next retrograde); the winged messenger isn’t interested in following any rules. So, if you find you are running in circles mentally or physically, remember that less is often more. Drop a few things, and try again.

The mood of a season is set by the Moon, which also happens to be sailing through Pisces. It’s just passed by dreaming Neptune, opening the psychic senses (perhaps exhausting them as well.) Its next port of call is a harmonious visit with Mars in Scorpio. Moon-Mars connections can increase your drive to get things done. So, if you feel your energy picking up, take advantage of it.

Jovial Jupiter is pulling strings from behind the curtain. That’s because Jupiter’s the ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces, the places where we find the Sun and Moon. It suggests that our thoughts and feelings are motivated by a yearning for purpose, authenticity or meaning. Take some time this month to explore how your thoughts, beliefs and actions reflect who you are. If there’s a disconnect in there, perhaps it's time to chart a different course.

In other celestial news, the easy alignment of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto continues. In history, it’s rare the three outer planets are so closely aligned (though it has happened several times in the 20th century). It’s often a signal of a deep paradigm shift in the collective unconscious. The energy is so subtle, it will take years for it to be felt in everyday life. For now, it’s merely a suggestion of a new possibility. This is especially true in how we relate to the earth and the oceans, given that the planets occupy earth and water signs.
