All of these guides prepared these heroes for the tests and trials to come.
Sagittarius symbolism in the Zodiac captures these dual needs: to explore and the learn. It’s another important step on what Joseph Campbell described as the “Hero’s Journey.” The many steps along the way of this timeless tale are even written in the stars. The word Zodiac translates as “the Way of Life,” describes this journey.
- The cycle begins with Leo, its ruler the Sun represents the soul’s divine spark.
- The Sun is incarnated in the arms of Virgo the Virgin, guided into manifestation by the divine messenger Mercury.

- Ruled by kingly Jupiter, Sagittarius is naturally optimistic, integrity-seeking and bluntly honest. However, speaking one's own truth is not always the same as relating the facts (as anyone who’s been captivated by Sagittarian charm may discover for themselves). Jupiter loves to teach, inspire and share, regardless of whether it's wanted or not.
- As a fire sign, Sagittarius lifts our energy upward in search of the divine light. Fire signs are enthusiastic, energetic and impulsive.
- Sagittarius is a mutable, changeable sign. Though intentions may be good, follow-through? Not as much. Still, mutable signs can play a key role in helping us move from one way of being to another.
- Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius. Mercury’s need to connect and channel is overwhelmed by the Sagittarius urge to explore all things.
- Sagittarius’ constellation is known as the Archer. Later mythology associated the archer with a centaur, a half-human, half-horse of Greek mythology. But an earlier version of the myth features a satyr (half human half goat) in place of a centaur, specifically the satyr Crotus who invented archery and acted as a nanny to the nine muses.

The Sagittarius experience is at its best when we are willing to set aside fears and judgments in order to explore beyond boundaries and limitations. But, there’s also a tendency to get bogged down by our own drama; getting too attached to our ego’s need to be the hero can lead us to ignore what we don’t know.
