Pisces & Mythology
Have you ever experienced a breakthrough after a difficult time? What did you feel? Elation? Wonder? Perhaps even limitless?
All of these sensations lay at the heart of the Pisces season. In the hero’s journey, it’s the place of elevation to a new state of being once the Hero has passed the first test…
But to understand why this is, we’ll need to start at the beginning. See, the archetypal Hero’s journey is encoded in the signs of the astrological Zodiac, a word that translates as “the Way of Life.”
- The cycle begins with Leo. Its ruler, the Sun, represents the soul’s divine spark.
- The soul is incarnated in the arms of a Virgin, Virgo, guided into manifestation by the divine messenger Mercury.
- Then in Libra, the Soul falls so in love with the pleasures of incarnation, it “forgets” its divine heritage
- In Scorpio, the Soul realizes its situation and decides to walk into the unknown to find a solution.
- In Sagittarius, the Hero meets a guide who offers sage advice on the road ahead.
- In Capricorn, the Sun must leave behind its mentor. Here the Soul begins its time of testing. Like the labors of Hercules, the Soul develops mastery and excellence through overcoming the obstacles on the path.
- In Aquarius, the Ego’s reality bubble gets a reset -- a breakdown to make a breakthrough. We see ourselves from a more detached and objective point of view so we can transcend that which limits us.
So, as you can see, Pisces is the natural response to a breakthrough. It’s the feeling of unlimited possibilities and we get used to life after our breakthrough experience.
We may feel an overwhelming sense of wonder, at one with the Cosmos, or a world of unlimited possibility. (In alchemy, this was a state known as the cauda pavonis, the peacock’s tail.)
Pisces & Astrology
And now we can begin to understand the essence of Pisces encoded in its astrology symbolism. What’s the astrology that sets the conditions for this expansive experience?
- Pisces, ruled by the noble Jupiter, challenges us to re-align with our divine spark, and the vision is has for our lives.
- As a water sign, Pisces is about feeling our way through what’s beyond the rational. Here we learn to trust our intuition.
- As a mutable sign, Piscean energy is fluctuating and transforming. What’s old is dissolving away, and what’s new is shaped in the imagination.
- Mercury is in detriment in Pisces. Mercury represents the talky mind that helps us process our day-to-day lives. In Pisces, the mind becomes boundless; thoughts wander aimlessly (brain fog, anyone?)
- Venus is exalted in Pisces. Pisces' soft edges and fantasy-prone world is a playground for romantic Venus. Here she’s celebrated as the idealized Muse she’s meant to be.
- The Pisces constellation is two fish, yoked and swimming in opposite directions. It’s a symbol of the divine dance of yin and yang, the engine that eternally churns forms from the ocean of unconsciousness
Make the Most of a Pisces Horoscope
The Pisces experience is at its best when you embrace your new, expansive vision of yourself and what’s possible. The two dangers? First, rejecting the vision and returning to where you were out of fear or habit. Or, second, mistaking the feeling of expansiveness for true enlightenment -- Pisces just another step on the journey, not the end of it.
So, how do you make the best of Pisces Season? Remember that it’s a time of change and growth. Enjoy the pleasures that come from jobs well done (or difficulties endured). If you need to take time out for reflection or to make space to imagine new possibilities, do it. But celebrating your success doesn’t mean dethroning you Ego just to give it a new perch; always remember that there’s still more to discover. The story never ends.
"The Sea is the favorite symbol for the unconscious, the mother of all that lives."
